Hello, welcome back to another of my Blogs.
Today I want to talk about mindfulness, which is a buzzword you hear a lot in relation to mental health and well-being.
So, what exactly is mindfulness and how do you “DO” it?
Well, mindfulness is a practise that involves paying attention to the present moment and without judgement. It’s about being fully aware of your thoughts, feelings and sensations, but without getting caught up in them.
So here are some key aspects of mindfulness.
Firstly, PRESENT MOMENT AWARENESS.
This is about focusing on the here and now rather than dwelling on the past or worrying about the future.
Then there’s NON-JUDGMENTAL OBSERVATION.
Yep, it’s a bit of a mouthful. But here you should observe your thoughts and feelings without labelling them as good or bad.
And finally, ACCEPTANCE.
This is where you accept your experiences as they are without trying to control or change them.
Here are some mindfulness techniques for you.
Try MEDITATION.
This is where you sit quietly and focus on your breathing or a specific object.
Now there are plenty of YouTube videos out there that can help you.
How about BODY SCAN MEDITATION?
This is about paying attention to each part of your body and noticing any sensations.
You can also do MINDFUL EATING, and you do this by slowly paying attention to the taste, the texture and smell of your food.
And this point is really helpful if you want to lose weight because it gives the stomach time to send a signal to your brain that you are full.
Now in today’s fast food and fast living society, we fill up the plate and eat so quickly, that we’ve already overeaten before that signal is registered by the brain. And then we finally stop eating.
And my final tip is MINDFUL WALKING.
Try walking at a slow or leisurely pace and paying attention to your senses and surroundings.
By practising Mindfulness, you can reduce stress, improve your mood, increase your overall well-being and it can even help you lose weight and sleep better.
